The Hardware Software Information Manager (HSIM) is an
application designed for computer users both at home or in
the business used to keep track of all computer systems and
the hardware (acessories) that have been installed into them
and the software that they are licensed to use.
Please note that this program IS NOT a disk manager but rather
a tool to either be used by businesses or at home to keep track
of hardware and software on computer systems.
Simple and straight forward menuing software allows you to add or
update records in the system using arrow keys and function keys
to all the features of the system.
Many standard reports are provided in different sequences to list
items from the files. In fact included in the software a Free
Form Report generator which will allow you to design, run and
save your own reports.
Several configuration options allow to to configure HSIM
to your specifications including printer support to support
any printer on the market.
Installation
============
Please see the accompanying documentation for complete installation
instructions.
System Requirements
===================
MS/DOS or PC/DOS 3.1 or higher
At least 2mb minimum hard disk space. Actual amount will depend
on the size of the various collections.
Any standard printer including HP laser.
One floppy drive either 3 1/2 or 5 1/4 any density.
Limitations
===========
There are no real limitations in the HSIM software.
You may store as much information as you like and are only
limited by the amount of hard disk space you have. Each of
the Files may contain a maximum of 16 million records which
should be plenty for most users or businesses.
In the standard version of HSIM only the Free Form report
generator may print to a network (Novell) printer. If you
Page 2 Hardware/Software Info. Mgr.
======================================================================
would like full network (Novell) support contact us for
special pricing.
Initial SignOn
==============
The first time you start up HSIM it will ask you for your
registered name. Please enter your name as it will be used
on screens and reports. The following is a sample of this
signon screen:

Invoking HSIM
=============
To start up HSIM enter the following commands at the
C prompt:
CD HSIM
HSIM
The first command will change to the directory where you
installed HSIM and the second command will start the
program. After several seconds (depending on the speed of
your machine) you will see the welcome screen. Press enter
2 times and the menus will appear at the top of the screen.

Browsing The Files
==================
As you begin to add records to the various files the software
will automatically put you into a browse mode (when there is at
least one record). The following is an example of the browse
screen for the Vendor Table:
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ Vendor Table ║
╠═══════════════╤═══════════════════════════════════╣
║ Vendor Name │ Full name of Vendor ║

║Intiut │Intuit ║
║Maxstor │Maxstor ║
║MicroSoft │MicroSoft ║
║SPC │Software Publishing, Inc ║
╚═══════════════╧═══════════════════════════════════╝
By using the up and down arrow keys you can move to different
records in the file. Using the [PGUP] and [PGDN] keys you can
move a full screen at a time (about 16 records), and using [Alt
PGUP] or [Alt PGDN] you can move to the first record or last
record in the file. When you have found the record you would
like to view or change (indicated by highlighting) press the
enter key. The record will now be displayed.
Also note at the bottom of the screen there is a field used for
searching. If you have a large file you can use this field to
position the highlighted item to a range of records. For example
if you are in the SYSTEM file and have used the select key
(see below) for System ID and you are looking for a SYSTEM-01
then enter into this field SYS or SYST or SYSTE or SYSTEM and the
highlighted item will be the first item. You can use this
feature to move quickly through the files.
If you would like to view records in a different order press the
[F10] key and a small menu will appear at the lower right hand
corner of the screen giving you the choices for the file you are
browsing. The following example illustrates the alternates for
the Software file:
┌>Select Key<─┐
│ Product Name│
│ Program Type│
└─────────────┘
Each file in HSIM has different selection keys so you will
need to experiment as to what select keys are best for you.

======================================================================
Screen Saver
============
After 2 minutes of inactivity HSIM will display the
following screen:
┌──────────────────────────────┐
│ The screen has been saved │
│ Press the spacebar to resume │
└──────────────────────────────┘
This box will move around the screen in a random pattern until
such time as you press the space key at which time you will
return back to the same screen you were at.

Data Entry of Information
=========================
This is the menu that you will used to select the various
files for data entry (adding, changing, or deleting records)
from the system. Up selecting this menu item the following
menu will appear:
╔═══════════════════════════╗
║ System File ║
║ Software Records ║
║ Hardware Records ║
╚═══════════════════════════╝
The first menu item under the DATA ENTRY item is SYSTEM.
HSIM has an originization for keeping records together and
can be summarized as follows:
To add either hardware or software records there must
be a corresponding SYSTEM record to be used.
To delete a system record ALL of the hardware and
software records must either be deleted or reassigned
to another SYSTEM record.
Hardware and Software records are not linked together
with one another.
If you are using HSIM for a business and you have items that
do not belong to a system we suggest that you create a dummy
SYSTEM record say using the SYSTEM ID of "UNASSIGNED" and
place all those items under this system.

Free Form Report Generator
==========================
Each report is based on a primary database you select from a
window. You select the fields you want in the report,
specify upper and lower limits of field values to select for
the report, and you select a printer configuration. If the
configuration you want does not exist, you can add a new
one.
You can define as many reports as you want for each file.
All reports print in a columnar format with headings. Based
on the printer configuration you select, an effort will be
made to print one record per line by switching between print
sizes and types. If a complete record does not fit on one
line, it will wrap to the next line between two fields.
SAMPLE USAGE
============
First, highlight "User-Defined Reports" and press [Enter].
You will see the following screen with the heading "List of
Files". These are all the databases in HSIM:

Reorganize/Sort
===============
From time to time the files in Hardware/Software Information
Manager must be reorganized or sorted. If you find that you
have lost some records (maybe you turned off your machine or
had a power failure) then this function can be used to
rebuild all the indexes in the system.
This function will also optimize disk space by unused space from
the files (when records are deleted the disk space that they
occupy does not go away)
If any of the following situations occur then it is time to
sort the files:
It appears that records seem to be missing from one or
more files.
You have been deleting a lot of records.
You have been changing a lot of records.
This process should only take a few minutes depending on the
size (number of recrods) of your files. You will see messages
indicating progress as the sorting is processing.

either view a record or add a new record you will see that
fields have identifiers like "Asset No" or "Description".
These areas of the screen cannot be modified but you can
change there color.

└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
The Printer Setup Utility will allow you to define your own
printer configurations for Hardware/Software Information Manager.
Four standard configurations come standard with the product
The Printer Setup Utility is used by both the Free Form Report
generator and reports that need more than 80 characters to print, such
as the wide reports.
The Printer Setup Utility is selected directly from the submenu of
MISC.
When you are ready to use this function, highlight PRINTER SETUP, then
press [enter]. Once selected, the list of printer configurations will
appear.
The software uses three different setup strings to determine how to
lay out lines of text before the actual printing begins. These
strings also determine when a page is full and when to skip to the
next page, and finally what codes (escape sequences) need to be sent
to the printer also. The software will automatically select the
proper setup string and page size that best fits the report. If one
line of the report will fit in the width specified by WIDTH 1, the
level 1 Setup String will be used. If the line of the report is too
wide for the level 1 Width, but less than or equal to the Level 2
Width, the Level 2 Setup String will be used. If the line of the
report is too wide for the level 2 Width, but less than or equal to
the Level 3 Width, the Level 3 Setup String will be used.
If the report is still too wide, the software will utilize more than
one line on the page per printed record printed, and will print on
each line as many fields as will fit without breaking, and then will
wrap to the next line. If a line has to wrap to the next line, the
Page 46 Hardware/Software Info. Mgr.
======================================================================
software will adjust the number of lines per page to compensate for
the fact that fewer records will fit on a page.
You can force the software to use the same Setup String, Width and
Line all the time by setting all three levels to the same value. This
is a good idea when you are using 80 column paper in a 130 column
printer.
Printer Setup Strings
=====================
To follow along with this example, you need to select the printer with
the configuration ID of "HP", printer name "Hewlett Packard Laser Jet
II" from the list of printer configurations. Once selected, read the
following explanation of the Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Width and
Length Fields.
Notice the /027 in each of the Setup Strings and the Reset String.
Anytime you want to include a character in a string that cannot be
entered through the keyboard, you can enter a backslash followed by
the character's ASCII value. You MUST use three positions for the
ASCII value even if is is less than 100. On a Hewlett Packard Laser
Printer, the Escape key, which acts as a control character, has an
ASCII value of 27. /027 was entered because three positions need to
be filled. This value (/027) tells the printer that the text to
follow is not to be printed, but is to interpreted as configuration
information
The Level 1 Setup String tells the software to set the printer to
Courier font, that 80 characters will fit on one line and that no more
than 55 lines of the page will be used.
The Level 2 Setup String tells the software to switch to the 16.6
characters per inch Pica font and that 130 characters will fit on one
line.
The Level 3 Setup String tells the software to remain at 16.6
characters per inch, but to switch to Landscape (sideways) printing.
Now, 170 characters will fit on one line (Width = 170) and the page
length will be reduced (Length = 40).
If you need additional help in setting up your printer configuration
please give us a call at our Technical Support number listed in the
front of the Users' Guide.

printer is number 2 and so on.
If the software will be running on a stand-alone
PC, or if the reports with this configuration are
to be routed to a printer connected to the first
parallel printer port on the PC, the Network
Printer Number should be set to 0 (zero).
